Fans (and horses) will be mighty disappointed: The palace confirmed that Kate Middleton will forgo the traditional horse-drawn carriage and instead, travel by car to the nuptials.
Royal commentators said the decision for Middleton to arrive at the church by car, rather than by carriage, was an example of the families trying to keep costs down at a time when Britain is facing sharp cuts in public spending. The image of the princess-to-be arriving on four wheels will stand in stark contrast to the iconic images of Diana arriving at the church in a carriage.
Is it a smart, modern update? Or will it disappoint fans who expected to wave at the princess-to-be?

Re: the carriage - it's both sweet & old fashioned - and if Kate wants to break wth the tradition, that's not a bad thing. I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunity for well wishers to wave, toss rice, etc. This yank will be getting up at O-dark-thirty to catch the wedding - I'm dying to see the dress!
I think its kind of sad and disappointing that shes choosing a car over the carriage...the horse drawn carriage is sweet and romantic...anyone can arrive in a car. Will I be watching? Of course...I watched Charles and Diana's wedding...it was beautiful....and to those bitter individuals who gripe about the cost and yadda yadda yadda....something like this is a feelgood kind of thing...it doesn't happen every day...and it makes people smile....so if you can't say something nice....then just shutup.
The coach Diana rode in was sealed, no ventilation. I wouldn't be surprised if KM chose to arrive via auto because of the uncomfortably suffocating ride provided by that particular coach. Watch the tape of Diana arriving at St. Paul's, she practically jumps out in relief.
I think for the royal couple to travel together by carriage after the wedding is romantically sweet and allows the many well-wishers along the route to greet them, but for just the bride to travel that way, when all she wants is to get to the church "unrumpled", is not necessary. And the open carriage must be a security nightmare - they're smart to limit it.
Kate Middleton is traveling by motor car because she has a serious allergy to horses according to an Australian reporter . My sister has the same allergy which causes serious sneezing and severe congestion. Antihistamines provide only very temporary relief. Poor Kate wants to at least try to walk down the aisle without having an asthma like attack. The brave little princess (to be) is courageously going to try to ride to back to Buckingham palace in a horse drawn carriage surrounded by the household cavalry once she is officially married. If I were her I would have a double wedding with Zara Phillips. It would be quite spectacular. Since Zara is already a royal she could ride in the horsedrawn carriage to the wedding with the household cavalry and arrive after Miss Middleton was halfway down the aisle. She could then leave with the horses with the new Princess following at an allergically safe distance. Miss Middleton will probably not be distraugt if it rains on her wedding day which would make it easier for her to breathe.

How Kate arrives at the church for her own wedding should certainly be her own choice; but I fail to see how a carriage already owned by the royal family, along with horses that are already being fed and housed, is creating an expense over a more conventional (now) vehicle. I personally recognize the place horses have in every civilized country as one of the great tools of change and growth, and it would be nice to have them acknowledged as one of the vessels through which the Royal Family became just that....human society seems all too willing to forget that, and to give themselves credit for advancements that would not have been possible without this noble creature. I love the pomp and ceremony of the British Royal Family, and would dearly love to be present to extend my good wishes; I'll have to satify that desire here by saying: Congratulations to the young royal couple, and nothing but blessings and joy for your entire lives....God save the Queen of Britain and her family.
If it's true she is allergic to horses, then the car is the only way to go. Who wants to be sick during the ceremony!. However, even if she is not allergic, she should have her own way that day. After all she's the bride.
