  • The 'people's wedding'? Kate invites hometown friends

The queen and (possibly) Kanye might be attending the royal wedding, but that doesn’t mean it’s restricted to the rich and famous. Regular, common folk – including Kate Middleton’s hometown local butcher, grocer and mailman – will be watching the couple exchange vows at Westminster Abbey, according to the Daily Mail.

Roughly 1,900 people have been invited to the ceremony, but only several hundred of those in attendance at Westminster Abbey were extended invitations to the reception. John Haley, who runs the Old Boot Inn – the Middleton family’s local pub – is one such person who will only attend the nuptials, not that it bothers him.

“I’ll be back [at my pub] in the evening and we’ll have our own party,” he told the U.K. Mirror. “I’m very happy for Kate... We’re used to seeing Kate in the pub. The first time she and William came in it was nerve-racking but you soon realise they’re just a normal couple.”

  • How is Kate doing as a future princess?

Kate Middleton has been acting like a natural at recent public appearances — accepting flowers with a smile and easily giving the royal wave — so much so that one wonders if she got lessons from Julie Andrews. The British press (which can often be brutal) are giving glowing reviews to the future bride, going so far as to liken her to the beloved Diana. Msnbc’s Martin Bashir compares and contrasts the late princess with Kate Middleton, the woman who would have been her royal daughter-in-law.

Which tunes will the Queen rock out to on the royal wedding dance floor?

Some seem to think DJ Sam Young — a fixture in the London club scene — would know. The 31-year-old Londoner has taken music requests from the future king of England, prompting speculation the DJ could reign over the dance floor at William and Kate Middleton's wedding reception. Part of his claim to fame? Prince William once requested Outkast's "Hey Ya” years ago at a nightclub he was DJing at.

"Everyone is assuming I'm DJing that wedding and I'm not going to comment," he said to the Associated Press. "If they ask me then my whole tour will go down the toilet," Young said without hesitation. "But they haven't asked me. Yet."

While Young says he doesn’t regularly communicate with the prince, this DJ to the stars was more than willing to share his top playlist should be get the royal gig. Here are the top 25 songs Kate and William’s guests might be partying to:

  • Kate & Will pour bubbly on a boat

    Jon Super / AP

Proof that life as a royal isn’t all jewelry-rattling and caviar-nibbling, Prince William and his blushing bride-to-be Kate Middleton performed a bit of royal duty on Thursday, making a rare public appearance in Anglesey, Wales, to christen Trearddur Bay Lifeboat Station’s brand-new lifeboat, the “Hereford Endeavour.”

Departing slightly from tradition, Middleton – sporting a fetching feathered hat – demurred from smashing a bottle of champagne against the vessel, opting instead to pour the sparkling beverage regally over its bow. As the “Hereford Endeavor” is inflatable, cracking a bottle on it would have proven a challenging task, let alone possibly damaging for the craft.

“They are a lovely couple,” said Jean Critchley, 63, who witnessed the nautically noble ceremony first hand with her husband and grandson. “He is a great lad and she is a beautiful girl.”

This lifeboat dedication is only the second public appearance the couple has made since the announcement of their engagement in November.

  • Will Prince William's bachelor party go out to sea?

Boys will be boys: Prince Harry and Prince William hold an African rock python during a visit to Mokolodi Education Centre on June 15, 2010 in Gaborone, Botswana. (Getty)

Reports are flooding in that Prince William’s bachelor party – planned by Prince Harry – will be a fete on the sea, with a “variety of extreme watersports.” According to the UK Sun, the royal brothers will bid farewell to William’s bachelorhood with speedboats, surfing and waterskiing. After sailing the high seas, they will reportedly will go on a pub crawl – to make up for their sober time on the water.

A senior Royal source said a watersports weekend was "entirely plausible."Another source said: "The watersports weekend is a perfect option. They can let their hair down without worrying about who is around."

A Clarence House spokesman said: "The stag party is an entirely private matter."

No word yet on the date, but here's hoping it's well before April 29 (have you seen 'The Hangover'? Now combine it with 'Waterworld').

As Prince William and Kate Middleton make their first "official" public appearance, details of their bachelor and bachelorette parties emerge. NBC's Keith Miller reports.

  • Betty Crocker: Let them eat (royal wedding) cake!

    By Merisa Fink

Cake behemoth Betty Crocker has jumped into the royal confectionery kitchen to dream up four possible cakes for the impending nuptials of the century. The designs were inspired by the famed British adage "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue."  We've picked our favorites, and you can too by voting here.  After all, Britain is a cake-ocracy, now, right?

Something old: Betty Crocker's design of this cake is traditional and unexpected at the same time — its elegance delicately hangs in the balance of its unusual ceiling suspension.  Although perhaps it's a little too "Camilla" for this fresh royal duo.

Something new: The topiary inspiration for this cake is amazing, and only enhanced by the frosted sugar cookies and dainty petite fours detailing that evoke the nostalgia of high tea. If Kate would be so bold, it would be a whimsically beautiful choice.  However, its unconventional design may ring a little more "Harry" than "William."

Something borrowed: Pies are so hot right now.  Here, pie crust is a decorative and delicious fondant on the cake. If it were full of blackbirds, it would be perfection.

Something blue: The majestic blue velvet interior of this cake is to die for.  As long as it has a cream cheese frosting (as any respectable red velvet cake variation does) this promising confection has the makings of a cake fit for a king.

    Cast your vote!

    Kirsty Wigglesworth / AP file

With only about two months left before the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, royal-watchers are already whipped up into a frenzy. Following the news that stately invitations have been popped in the post, tongues started clicking at portions of the leaked guest list, specifically at talk of who was being asked to attend and who was going to have to make do with watching the fairytale-suitable nuptials from the comfort of their own couch.

But if those from the latter category felt nonplussed that celebrities like soccer-ball-worrying David Beckham and serial-acceptance-speech-interrupter Kanye West were rumored to be invited to the regal vow-swapping, a new report surfacing today ought to really leave them flabbergasted. Along with -- according to the Daily Mail -- her purportedly “cannabis-smoking” uncle Gary Goldsmith, Kate Middleton has invited one John Haley, the pint-pulling proprietor of her local pub, The Old Boot Inn. “It’s a great honor,” Haley told The Daily Mirror, “I’ve known the family for a long time. They are a lovely normal family, and I’m very happy for Kate. I don’t know what I’ll wear though or what I’ll get them as a present.”

Those keen on replicating the complete Middleton experience can catch a glimpse of The Old Boot Inn on bus tours that now tour Kate’s hometown.

  • Up close and personal with Diana's wedding gown

We get a lot of celebrities coming through the TODAY doors (George Clooney, Lady Gaga, Richard Simmons…), but this morning’s guest really takes the (wedding) cake: Princess Diana’s iconic dress.

The taffeta-drenched piece of royal history, in all its 25-foot-train glory, was live in Studio 1A, having come directly from Grand Rapids, Michigan as part of a Princess Diana exhibit (next stop, Kansas City!). Like most celebrities, the dress comes with its own security, and only three people – including our guests, art handlers Nick Grossmark and Graeme Murton – were actually allowed to touch it. The dress technically belongs to Prince William and Prince Harry, but is currently in the care of Diana's family, the Althorp Estate. Take a look at the famous gown:

Art handlers Nick Grossmark and Graeme Murton show off the 275 yards of pearl-studded silk taffeta, tulle and netting that comprise the stunning wedding gown worn by Princess Diana on her royal wedding day.

  • No royal wedding invite? Get a job at the palace

Reuters:  If you were not lucky enough to be one of the 1,900 people invited to Prince William's upcoming wedding, then fear not: you could always get a job making coffee for the guests or washing up afterwards.

Queen Elizabeth has placed two job adverts on her website (www.royal.gov.uk), advertising for a General Assistant (Coffee Room) and a General Assistant (Wash-up).

Both pay about $22,700, or 14,000 pounds,  a year and the posts are based at the monarch's Buckingham Palace residence in London although both appointees will have to travel to other royal homes around Britain.

The dish-washer must maintain "the cleanliness of the staff restaurant and wash-up areas" while the other employee will be in a team responsible for arranging trays for tea and coffee and breakfast with "the correct glass and porcelain."

If neither of those jobs grabs you, the queen is also looking for someone to earn up to 75,000 pounds a year as Head of Royal Travel, with a brief to ensure the royal family travels cost-effectively and with an eye on environmental issues.

  • Who's invited to the royal wedding... and who's not?

John Stillwell / Pool via Reuters

Nearly 2,000 invitations for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton are in the mail. Here, a member of the Lord Chamberlain's Office at Buckingham Palace readies the invitations for mailing.

There are just over two months to go until the royal wedding, and the invitations are out. Embossed with a gold-lettered EIIR, the queen's insignia, at the top, the invitation features elegant black writing on a stiff white card. "The Lord Chamberlain [was] commanded by the Queen to invite" about 1,900 guests, who were asked to wear either dress uniform, morning coats or lounge suits.

As royals and commoners alike eagerly check their mailboxes this week, the guest list is slowly leaking out. Approximately 50 members of the royal family, along with 40 or so members of other royal families were invited, and some of the surprise invitees include King of Jordan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, the Sultan of Oman, the King of Bahrain, the Sultan of Brunei and the King of Saudi Arabia, Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper reported. Royals from around Europe – Greece, Spain, Sweden, Denmark and Norway – are also likely to attend.

In addition to royalty, football player David Beckham, who worked closely with William on England’s 2018 World Cup bid, and his wife Victoria were invited, UK newspapers reported. Also rumored to be on the guest list are singer Elton John, a close friend of William's mother, Diana, and maybe even rapper Kanye West. William's office said about 1,000 of the guests will be the family and friends of the prince, Kate and their parents.

The invitations for the wedding of Prince William and bride-to-be Kate Middleton have been sent out to their guests, including 50 members of the British royal family. NBC's Keith Miller reports.

But just as notable as who was included on the guest list, is who was not. President and Michelle Obama didn’t make the cut as it’s not a state wedding, and neither did Sarah Ferguson, the ex-wife of Prince Andrew, William’s uncle.

There will be 200 guests from the British government, parliament and diplomatic service, 80 guests from charities William is involved in, 30 people from the armed forces, and 60 senior government figures from Commonwealth countries.  About 600 people have been invited to a lunchtime reception after the wedding service at Buckingham Palace and 300 to an evening event hosted by Prince Charles.

  • Mexican teen on hunger strike for royal wedding invite

Mexican ninteteen-year-old Estibalis Chavez holds a hunger strike in front of the UK embassy in Mexico City. (Getty Images)

Some folks are taking this wedding more seriously than others. Take Estibalis Chavez, 19, for example: The Mexican teen hasn't eaten for the past eight days — consuming only water — in hopes that her bizarre, pathetic stunt will force Will and Kate to invite her to their exclusive wedding celebration. (Nothing says "good times" quite like a hunger striker!)

According to a Reuters report, Chavez has been camped in a blue tent outside the British Embassy in Mexico City, handing out fliers to strangers. "Are they going to let me die just because they wouldn't give me an invitation to the royal wedding?" Chavez wrote on one of the fliers. "This is my only dream," read another next to a picture of the smiling royal couple.

Chavez says her unconventional campaign was inspired by her appreciation for Princess Diana. "I think she was one of the most interesting women in history, and one of the best and most beautiful," she told Reuters. "My mother was a big fan of Lady Di too and she died when I was born, so I promised myself I would attend her son's wedding."

It's a cause the teen doesn't seem to be giving up on, going so far as to blame the British Embassy for not intervening. "The embassy could talk to Britain for me but they haven't," she said. "But I'm going to stay here until I can't go on."

  • Royal wedding invitations are in the mail

    Reuters

Should family and friends of the royal family (and hey, maybe Elton John?) start checking their mailboxes? On Thursday, TODAY's Peter Alexander reported – citing royal sources – that the invites are “heading out soon,” and now a St. James' Palace spokesperson confirmed to Usmagazine.com that roughly 1,800 invites have been mailed , which means we’re thisclose to seeing leaked shots of the invitation design.

"The invitations to the wedding have gone out," the rep told Us. "By now, Friday afternoon, I can confirm that they will have all gone out by now."

There has been no news of what to expect, but it will most likely resemble Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding invitation, but with Kate and William’s entwined initials.

Last month, it was reported that Europe’s royal families and sovereigns – who are given earlier warning than foreign heads of state and non-VIP guests – were notified of the upcoming nuptials via fax machine, which was ... adorable. The archaic mode of communication was supposedly chosen as an “efficient and polite way to inform people as quickly as possible” for “large-scale” events. While physical mail is still not as forward-thinking as e-mail, it’s still a step up from old-school faxes.

Prince William and Kate will partake in what may be their only public engagement before the wedding – a rescue boat dedication, which some royal watchers are calling Middleton's "christening" of her new role. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

  • We're married, eh? Will and Kate plan Canada trip

Prince William and Kate Middleton will wed in London on April 29 and begin their first official foreign trip as a married couple in June. The newlyweds' first official destination? Canada.

"Their decision to come to Canada first is a testament to our country's very close relationship with the Royal Family," Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement.

The prince and his new bride will spend June 30 to July 8 touring the provinces of Alberta, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, the Canadian capital Ottawa and the Northwest Territories.

Queen Elizabeth -- Canada's head of state -- visited Canada last year. A spokesman for William told Reuters the prince was eager to visit Canada himself and show his new wife a country close to his family's heart.

  • Kate's see-through dress to be auctioned

    Instyle.com/ AP

Middleton walked the runway at a University of St. Andrews charity fashion show; Designer Charlotte Todd with the dress she designed.

It’s not exactly worthy of a Victoria’s Secret editorial, but Kate Middleton’s infamous see-through dress is garnering buzz. The transparent piece that the princess-to-be donned at a 2002 charity fashion show at the University of St. Andrews — when she and William were students — will be auctioned off in London next month.

The racy knitted lace dress – which was originally meant to be worn as a skirt — was held accountable for igniting the passion between the two lovebirds, as they started dating exclusively shortly thereafter. (The British tabloids widely reported that Prince William paid for a front-row seat at the show.)

The piece of royal courtship history is expected to sell for more than 8,000 pounds ($12,800) at Kerry Taylor Auctions on Mar. 17. Designer Charlotte Todd, who did not pursue a career in fashion and now works at an aquarium, is honored to have played a part in the couple’s romance.

"If it is true that my design helped change the Prince's interest in Kate from platonic to romantic as has been reported, then I am pleased to have played a part — however minor," said Todd. "I never would have imagined as I sat knitting this piece that one day it would be so important."

The auction will also include two gowns worn by William's mother, the late Princess Diana.

  • Prince William chooses Prince Harry as best man

NBC's Peter Alexander reports that Kate Middleton has chosen her sister, Pippa, as her maid of honor and Prince Harry has chosen his brother, William, for his best man.

It’s no surprise, but now it's official: Prince William has asked his brother, Prince Harry, to serve as best man at his wedding. Kate’s sister, Pippa, will be the maid of honor. At 26, she will be one of the oldest royal bridesmaids ever.

Prince Harry will be responsible for organizing William’s bachelor party, and could even give the traditional best man's speech at the wedding, while one of Pippa’s main roles could be to make sure that Kate’s dress is perfectly displayed – no easy feat if Kate’s train measures as long as Diana’s at 25-feet long. As chief bridesmaid, she could also be expected to make sure that the younger bridesmaids and page boys behave themselves.

Best men in royal weddings are usually known as supporters, but in a break with tradition, Prince Harry was referred to as "best man" in the official announcement.

The royal couple-to-be also named a number of bridesmaids and page boys for the April 29 nuptials, including the daughter of the Earl and Countess of Wessex, and Prince William’s first cousin, Lady Louise Windsor, who will be 8 years old at the time of the wedding. This will be the public’s first real look at Lady Louise, who has been largely kept out of public eye by her parents. She suffers from a rare condition, exotropia, which causes her eyes to squint.

NBC's Kier Simmons reports from London on a new set of comic books that feature Kate Middleton and Prince William. Plus, the latest addition to Kate Middleton's group of bridesmaids.

The youngest bridesmaid will be 3 years old at the time of the wedding. Others chosen include Margarita Armstrong-Jones, 8, the daughter of Viscount and Viscountess Linley; Eliza Lopes, the 3-year-old daughter of Harry Lopes and Camilla Parker Bowles' daughter, Laura; and Grace van Cutsem, 3, a godchild of William.

Page boys for the wedding will be William Lowther-Pinkerton, 10, the son of William's private secretary, and Tom Pettifer, 8, another of William's godchildren.

Officials said details about the bridesmaids' dresses and the page boys' uniforms will be made available on the wedding day.

  • Kate Middleton lunches... with Camilla

    Getty Images file

Were they bonding over a love of hats? Sharing tiara care tips? Scheming how to take the throne?

Who knows exactly what was exchanged between Kate Middleton and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, during their lunch at an upscale London hotel on Wednesday. A PEOPLE magazine source says the two were spotted enjoying a meal at Koffmann's restaurant at the high-profile Berkeley hotel, with Kate holding a notebook (or was it a wedding planner?).

According to the Daily Mail, a local patron reported the following:

"All four women were talking away like mad and none of the waiters could get a word in edgeways to serve their lunch. Kate looked fantastic in a very short black skirt, black opaque tights, a short jacket and boots.

I heard Camilla saying...  'if I can give you one bit of advice...' Kate was really enjoying the moment.

I did hear talk of trumpets and someone said 'we can’t have trumpets, the ceiling is too high,' which may have been a reference to Westminster Abbey."

Unfortunately, there seems to have been no talk of the bride-to-be's much-buzzed about wedding gown.

Prince William's fiancee, Kate Middleton, and her soon-to-be step-mother-in-law seemed to be all smiles lunching at a swanky London restaurant.

  • Did Will and Kate pick a honeymoon spot?

Getty Images; Mario Testino / Reuters file

It looks like Will and Kate may have decided on a honeymoon! A source tells Us Weekly that the royal couple will celebrate their nuptials in the Caribbean island of Mustique — the spot where they vacationed twice in 2008.  Kudos to the couple for not opting for a boring vacation. (Remember when Prince Charles and Princess Diana spent first part of their honeymoon at the royal family's home at Broadlands, Hampshire?)

And it seems as if the duo even recruited family help to deal with the immense task of choosing an appropriate location. “[Kate Middleton’s mom, Carole] went for her 56th birthday with her husband, Michael, and Kate’s sister, Pippa," said the source. "And she had security look over the resort to make sure it will be safe.” A rep for St. James’ Palace, however, says “It’s too early to talk honeymoon.” We politely disagree.

  • Is Kate more fashionable than Gaga?

    Getty Images

Behold, we have a new queen of fashion buzz! And – gasp! – it's not America's favorite raw meat fashionista.

Kate Middleton dethroned the eccentric singer as top style buzzword, according to a new survey by the Texas-based Global Language Monitor of buzz words in print, on the Internet, and in social media. Gaga came in at a close second, followed by the words "sheer" and "shirt dresses." (Hey, at least it wasn't Justin Bieber's haircut.)

It seems Kate glided into first after wearing her stunning blue Issa dress for the official engagement announcement. She might just keep her place in buzzword line if her wedding gown – to be revealed on April 29 – lives up to fans' expectations.

It’s a roast of the royal couple! U.K. restaurant and pub chain Crown Carveries re-created the engagement portrait of Prince William and Kate Middleton using only dinner table delights. Carrots, corn and peas make up the background, while turkey is used for the couple’s skin. Topping it all off, the engagement ring is made with – what else? – gravy.

It took food artist Prudence Staite more than two hours to serve up the "fork-trait," reports The Publican, a newspaper for the U.K.’s bar and pub industry.

“We wanted to produce the first official ‘fork-trait’ using all the majestic ingredients found on one of our princely banquets – a roast with all the trimmings – to give the happy couple a tasteful memento of their special day,” the operations director of Crown Carveries told the paper.

On TODAY, British designer Bruce Oldfield – rumored to be designing Kate Middleton’s gown – hinted that the bride-to-be might opt for two dresses, one for the morning's ceremony, followed by another for the evening ball. It seems the earlier edition might have certain modesty restrictions, including requiring sleeves for Westminster Abbey. Could it be Kate would change into a more modern, sexy style for the ball? Or will she stick it out in the same dress, as did Princess Diana? We’ll have to wait till April 29 to find out, but famous designers have already begun sketching what they’d like to dress Kate in.
